Dear Friends:
We enter our 96th year with an invigorated sense of purpose.
Reacting to the national economic crisis, our Governor
announced in the Fall that 1,000 state government jobs will
be eliminated and that the state budget will be reduced by
more than one billion dollars, affecting dozens of social service
programs and assistance for families, the elderly and teens at
risk. Here on the South Shore we are already seeing the
effects and expect an increased demand for our services.
In response to these cuts, we have already increased our funding
to Wellspring of Hull. In addition to funding a crisis counseling
position, we are now funding a heat assistance program. We
have also reached out to Elder Service programs and Food Pantries in the
surrounding towns of Hingham, Hull, Scituate, and Norwell
to assess their needs. We continue to enjoy a wonderful and
productive relationship with Cohasset Elder Services as they
struggle to find a new home to serve the needs of an increasing
senior population living on fixed incomes who are struggling
with the high cost of heat, medical care and prescription drugs.
The Cohasset Consignment Shop, which has been owned and
operated by the Social Service League for 55 years, continues
to thrive. We take pride in offering affordable quality goods
to our customers, especially during this economic crisis.
